The Shell Theatre Performance Series continues this Saturday (Oct. 1) with Ellen Doty.
Doty is a jazz musician from Okotoks who put out her first album in 2014, she's been writing and touring ever since.
"I started singing when I was five-years-old," said Doty.
Her grandmother lived across the street from Nat King Cole in Los Angeles when she was growing up.
"So that music was passed down to me from my father. I love sharing my music and stories that are meaningful to me. It's been an amazing journey and I'm looking forward to more."
Doty's show will happen right in the middle of Alberta Culture Days, which is celebrated across the province Friday until Sunday.
"I think this is a really cool thing Alberta is doing, to celebrate the diverse and amazing music scene we have here. They're doing a lot to make this accessible to everyone. I think that's one big thing about music and art - everyone can appreciate it in some way. There's something very special about music for me that transcends so many other things and really takes you to another place. It's great that we can all come together to make music or art something that everyone can be a part of."
Doty wanted to make sure her show was accessible to everyone, so she is only asking people to pay what they can afford for admission.
"I love this idea, I think it's amazing. We really want everyone to feel like they can be there and they can come no matter where they're at in their life. If they're having a tough month or a tough week, just come join us. If you can't afford to donate anything please come to the show. If you can put in five bucks, that's great. Bring your whole family because it's going to be an awesome time of us all being together," added Doty.
The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Shell Theatre, buy your tickets here.
