Pierce the Veil
Tattooed San Diego rockers Pierce the Veil make their way to Edmonton Thursday, Feb. 23, for an evening of pop-punk fun. The four-piece, led by the Fuentes brothers, have been knocking around for over 10 years now, last May releasing their fourth full-length album, Misadventures. Opening for the evening are Falling in Reverse and Crown the Empire.

Tom Segura
Cincinnati’s Tom Segura brings his No Teeth No Entry tour to Edmonton, though hopefully a well maintained set of dentures will suit his proviso. The veteran standup comic and podcaster has been a fixture on Netflix, where his specials Mostly Stories and Completely Normal have been quite popular, but he’s also been known to pop up on such shows as Happy Endings, How to be a Grown Up, and Conan. He’s also a veteran of the comedy festival circuit, with appearances at Montreal’s Just For Laughs Comedy Festival, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and the South Beach Comedy Festival under his belt.

Slocan Ramblers
Now that they’ve spent three months convincing our neighbours to the south that they’re a band worth checking out, Toronto’s Slocan Ramblers have returned to Canada for a series of western Canadian dates that sees them stopping in Edmonton for a show at St. Basil’s on Friday night. The bluegrass band are still touring behind their acclaimed 2015 release Coffee Creek, but they’re also previewing newly written tracks for an as yet unscheduled new album. Opening is local singer-songwriter Ariana Brophy.

New Works
New Music Edmonton continues their season with a couple of out-of-town acts. Toronto’s Thin Edge New Music Collective and Montreal’s Ensemble Paramirabo are in town on Friday evening for a program of Canadian composers entitled Raging Against the Machine: Coming Together. New works by James O’Callaghan, Anna Pidgorna, and Colin Labadie will be featured, along with Coming Together by Frederic Rzewski and Karaoke Etudes by Yannis Kyriakides.

Prepare yourself for an evening of pop-jazz from vocalist Ellen Doty, as she holds down the Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove with her backup band, including guest saxophonist Eli Bennett. The Calgary-based singer-songwriter is already working on her second album, aimed for this fall, after releasing Gold in 2014, with the single Just So You Know appearing after, in the spring of 2015. Doty’s career has been accelerating ever since, highlights including a recent opening slot for Grammy Award winner Gregory Porter.

Klezmatics
It’s tough enough making a two-person relationship work, much less one involving seven. That’s exactly what the Klezmatics have done, somehow sticking it out through lean and fat years in their quest to bring Klezmer music into the 21st century. The now legendary New York combo are on tour celebrating three decades together, adding clarinetist Merlin Shepherd to the fold for the evening.

Magic show
Looking to mix some entertainment with shopping? Doo Doo the clown of Billy Madison fame is in town for the week, making West Edmonton Mall his home for a series of morning and afternoon events. On Sunday the Canadian children’s entertainer teams up with musician Aaron Matthews for an afternoon of, well, you can probably guess.

Poetry Brothel
This isn’t exactly the poetry reading that your 10th Grade English teacher primed you for. Instead, the Poetry Brothel brings together spoken word, burlesque, live music, and one-on-one readings for a much less demure performance than you’d normally expect. Tab CA, Liam Cody, Megan Dart, Colin Matty and Morgan Smith are among the roll call of performers at this edition of the Brothel, with the always astonishing Nanise in a featured role.

If you’re ever going to plan a heist it probably wouldn’t hurt to have Humphrey Bogart involved. That’s exactly what Big Mac (Donald MacBride) thinks in the 1941 classic High Sierra when he recruits Bogart (as Roy Earle) into robbing a California resort hotel, along with a mixed bag of criminal associates, including Ida Lupino as dance hall girl Marie. Raoul Walsh directs from a script by John Huston and W.R. Burnett.
