There were more than a few naysayers in Calgary songstress Ellen Doty’s life when she made the decision to leave school to pursue music, rather than finishing her geology degree. But time has proven Doty right: she’s just released her new album Goldto early acclaim, and she’s supporting it with a 30-city Canadian tour.

“It was a hard decision, but I’m so happy that I did it,” says Doty. “I made the jump to go all-in as an artist.”

"I wish," laughs Ellen Doty, when asked if her grandfather, who just happened to be neighbours with Nat King Cole in Los Angeles, ever had the music legend sign an album.

"My grandpa does have a ton of records, but he never got one autographed "¦ I'm not sure why."

For Doty, having signed Nat King Cole LP would have special meaning, far and above the fan factor. The Calgary vocalist cites Nat King Cole, along with Ella Fitzgerald, as prime influences in how she delivers her original compositions.

Calgary chanteuse and song writer Ellen Doty released her inaugural full CD titled 'Gold' this past May to much acclaim. Backed by wonderful musicians the album is, to paraphrase Donny and Marie, a little bit jazz, a little bit pop. An excellent vehicle for Ellen's sultry voice.

Already well known in her native Alberta, Ellen has begun a cross country tour promoting 'Gold'. Back by Oliver Miguel (sax/percussion), Conrad Good (bass) and Dan Reynolds (keys) Ellen's show is sure to please any jazz enthusiast.

Some are the Hallmark types, those who pluck a card from the drugstore shelves that offers an approximation of what they’re feeling for a host of different occasions.

But there are those who prefer the blank card, to be able to script their own thoughts and, ultimately, say what a Hallmark card can’t say: Who they really are.

A Calgary musician tapped into her hometown connections to help push her singing career to the next level.

In preparation for the release of her first full-length album Gold on May 29, pop-jazz singer/songwriter Ellen Doty hooked up with her Okotoks area connections to film a ’50s-themed music video for her song No Good Men. The video was filmed in the Harmony House Bed & Breakfast in Okotoks and Marv’s Classic Soda Shop in Black Diamond and will be showcased as part of a compilation show called Press Record on Telus Optik Local on Demand starting June 13.
